On the occasion of the exhibition Civic Floor at Mudam, Michelle Cotton, curator of the exhibition, will be in conversation with Sung Tieu (b. 1987, Hai Duong, Vietnam).

Civic Floor will be the first museum solo exhibition of Sung Tieus’ work outside of Germany.Working with a range of media including sculpture, drawing, text and sound, Tieu’s immersive installations consider the discrete visual codes embedded within institutional structures and their systems, raising questions of equality, governance and individual sovereignty.The work of Sung Tieu combines a sensitivity to linguistic and aesthetic codes with a rigorous, analytical approach to subject matter. Throughout her projects, she addresses how social or political control is imposed or reinforced via industrial design.

Biography

Sung Tieu is an artist based in Berlin. Forthcoming solo exhibitions include Mudam, Luxembourg (2022), Amant Foundation (2023), MIT List Visual Arts Center (2023) and Kunstmuseum Winterthur (2023). She has had solo exhibitions at Kunstmuseum Bonn; Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig (2021); Nottingham Contemporary; and Haus der Kunst, Munich (2020). Her work was included in the 34th Bienal de São Paulo and has been exhibited at Museion, Bolzano; Kunsthalle Basel (2021); Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt; GAMeC Museum, Bergamo; and Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2020). Tieu is the recipient of the Frieze Artist Award 2021 and the 2021 ars viva Prize. She also received the audience award for the 2021 Preis der Nationalgalerie, Berlin. Sung Tieu is currently a guest professor at Städelschule, Frankfurt.
